Stranger in a foreign land

We kick off this new show with the story of Joseph. Over the next several episodes, we’ll cover many angles to our mindset.

When this mini-series is over, the plan is to bring forward a few key lessons that will help us face difficult situations without falling into self-loathing, negative-self talk, and other self-esteem robbing practices.

The first topic starts in the early days of the 17 year old Joseph.

Stranger in a foreign land – Show Notes

Most of us are familiar with the story of Joseph through church. Few tackle the topic from a mindset perspective

The Start of the Story

Joseph was living with his dad, Jacob aka Israel, in a land that was not his native land. Genesis 37.

There, while adapting to his surroundings, Joseph starts to stand apart from his siblings.

  • His dad liked him more than his siblings: sibling rivalries anyone?
  • Jacob made Joseph a coat of many colors: favoritism anyone?
  • His brothers hated him and didn’t hesitate to make Joseph aware

What would you have done?

While some would have conformed to appease their siblings and others would have beat themselves up, Joseph didn’t appear to do any of this.

Instead, he tried to make his father be more aware of the dangerous path his older siblings were taking. It goes without saying, this didn’t make them any happier with Joseph

Lessons

When living in a place that isn’t your native home, you’re going to face all kinds of challenges that are unique to being an immigrant.

  • Fitting in.
  • Getting along.
  • Keeping your traditions.
  • Learning new traditions.
  • Acceptance with two different sets of cultural expectations.

It is possible. Especially when you’re keenly aware of your self-worth and value. Joseph understood his worth. It wasn’t based on feelings and arrogance. It was genuine work on himself to understand his worth as well as appreciate his worth from God’s perspective.
